Shopify SEO for stores that have outgrown the theme defaults.
Shopify will not stop you ranking. Its defaults will.
Shopify is fast, hosted and reliable — and it ships duplicate variant URLs, a second address for every product, tag pages that multiply without limit and collection pages with nothing to rank. We fix the platform problems in your theme’s Liquid, then build the collection architecture that earns rankings.
The Shopify problems no theme change will fix.
These are structural to the platform. They are not design decisions, and they do not show up in a Lighthouse score. Every one of them splits ranking signals that should point at a single page.
| Platform behavior | What it does to rankings | How we resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate product URLs | Every product is reachable at /products/x and /collections/y/products/x, so authority splits across two addresses. |
Canonical enforcement in Liquid, internal links normalized to one path. |
| Variant parameters | ?variant= URLs are crawlable and near-identical, spreading signals across every size and color. |
Parameter handling and canonical rules so the parent product owns the ranking. |
| Tag and filter pages | Tag combinations generate effectively unlimited thin URLs that consume crawl budget. | Robots and indexation rules that keep valuable filters and drop the rest. |
| /collections/all | A duplicate of your catalog competing with the collections you actually optimized. | Handled at template level so it stops competing with real category pages. |
| Thin collection pages | Shopify collections ship as a heading and a product grid, nothing for a search engine to assess. | Collection copy, internal linking and schema built into the template. |
| Paginated collections | Deep pagination buries products several clicks from any indexed page. | Pagination and internal linking restructured so deep products stay reachable. |
| App-injected scripts | Every installed app adds render-blocking weight, and Core Web Vitals is a real ranking input. | Script audit, conditional loading, removal of what stopped earning its cost. |
Work done inside your theme, not handed over as a document.
Most Shopify SEO engagements end with a spreadsheet of recommendations your developer never gets time to implement. We work in the store: Liquid templates, metafields, navigation and schema.
Theme-level technical SEO
Canonicals, robots directives, structured data and internal linking implemented in Liquid, so the fix holds for every product you add later.
Collection architecture
A category structure mapped to real search demand, with the navigation and internal links to make each collection rank for one clear intent.
Metafield-driven schema
Product, breadcrumb and FAQ structured data generated from metafields, so it stays correct as the catalog changes instead of drifting.
Speed & Core Web Vitals
App script audit, image and font delivery, layout stability — measured on real-user field data rather than a lab score.
AI search visibility
Entity and citation work so your products surface when a shopper asks an assistant rather than typing into a results page.
Revenue reporting
Organic sessions matched to Shopify orders, verifiable inside your own admin and analytics.
Built for Shopify merchants — not for everyone.
DTC brands on Shopify & WooCommerce
Stores doing real revenue that want organic search to carry more of the load their ad budget carries today.
Retailers stuck on page two
Catalogs whose rankings plateaued — usually a structural problem that no amount of new content fixes.
Founders tired of renting traffic
Owners who want an acquisition asset they own, measured in orders rather than impressions.
Five stages, same as every engagement we run.
Audit the store
Crawl, index coverage and theme review against the platform issues above, scoped to your catalog.
Fix the structure
Collection hierarchy, canonical logic and navigation rebuilt so authority reaches commercial pages.
Ship it in Liquid
Template changes, metafield schema and content implemented in your theme, on a staging copy first.
Tie it to orders
Attributed organic revenue and keyword movement, reported against Search Console and Shopify analytics.
Reinvest what works
Expand the collections returning revenue and retire the ones that are not.
How the work compounds, layer by layer.
Technical foundation
Fix crawl, indexation and canonical structure so every commercial page can be found and weighed.
Collection architecture
Collections mapped to how buyers actually search, each one owning a single intent.
Content & authority
Content that answers real buying questions and earns authority where it sells.
AI visibility
Schema and entity work so AI assistants can retrieve, trust and cite you.

The questions to ask before you hire anyone.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes, with caveats. Shopify gives you fast hosting, clean HTTPS and a reliable sitemap out of the box, which removes a whole class of problems. What it does not give you is control over URL structure, and its defaults create duplicate product paths, crawlable variant parameters and unlimited tag pages. Shopify SEO is largely the work of correcting those defaults, then building the collection architecture the platform leaves to you.
Can you change Shopify URL structure?
Not the prefixes. Shopify enforces /products/, /collections/
and /pages/, and no app removes them. What is controllable is the handle, the
canonical target, which paths get linked internally, and which parameterized URLs are
allowed to be crawled.
Do I need a Shopify SEO app?
Usually not, and often the opposite. Most SEO apps inject scripts and write metadata that duplicates what the theme already outputs, which costs page speed and creates conflicting tags. We prefer changes made in the theme’s Liquid: version controlled, no runtime weight, and still working if you cancel a subscription.
Will SEO work survive a theme change?
Only if it was built to. Work inside one theme’s Liquid is lost when you switch, so we document every template-level change and, where the structure allows, drive output from metafields that live outside the theme.
How long does Shopify SEO take?
Indexation and crawl fixes often move within weeks because they unblock pages that already carry authority. Competitive commercial rankings generally take three to six months. We report attributed organic revenue from the first month.
Do you work with Shopify Plus?
Yes. Plus adds scripts, expansion stores and more complex international setups, which changes the technical scope but not the approach, with additional work on multi-store duplication and hreflang where expansion stores are in use.
Shoppers are searching for what you sell. Someone else ranks.
