Shopify SEO services for Australian stores past the theme defaults.
Shopify will not stop you ranking. Its defaults will.
Shopify is fast, hosted and reliable — which is why most Australian DTC brands run on it — and it ships duplicate variant URLs, tag pages that multiply without limit and collection pages with nothing to rank. We fix that inside your theme’s Liquid, then build the collection architecture that earns rankings on Google.com.au.
Shopify SEO services fix the platform defaults that keep Australian stores off page one: duplicate variant URLs, tag-page bloat and thin collections. EcomOptix, an ecommerce marketing agency for Australian stores, ships canonical rules in Liquid, collection architecture and metafield schema, and measures the result as attributed organic revenue in your own analytics. The first step is a free growth analysis: a recorded video teardown and the first three fixes.
Shopify technical SEO problems every store inherits.
These are structural to the platform, not design decisions, and swapping themes carries every one of them across. Each splits ranking signals that should point at a single page. Variant-heavy ranges feel it first, which is why our beauty and cosmetics SEO work starts with the same audit.
| Platform behaviour | What it does to rankings | How we resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate product URLs | Every product is reachable at /products/x and /collections/y/products/x, so authority splits across two addresses. |
Canonical enforcement in Liquid, internal links normalised to one path. |
| Variant parameters | ?variant= URLs are crawlable and near-identical, spreading signals across every size and colour. |
Parameter handling and canonical rules so the parent product owns the ranking. |
| Tag and filter pages | Tag combinations generate effectively unlimited thin URLs that consume crawl budget. | Robots and indexation rules that keep valuable filters and drop the rest. |
| /collections/all | A duplicate of your catalogue competing with the collections you actually optimised. | Handled at template level so it stops competing with real category pages. |
| Thin collection pages | Shopify collections ship as a heading and a product grid, nothing for a search engine to assess. | Collection copy, internal linking and schema built into the template. |
| Paginated collections | Deep pagination buries products several clicks from any indexed page. | Pagination and internal linking restructured so deep products stay reachable. |
| App-injected scripts | Every installed app — Afterpay and Zip widgets included — adds render-blocking weight, and Core Web Vitals is a real ranking input. | Script audit, conditional loading, removal of what stopped earning its cost. |
What our Shopify SEO services include for an Australian store.
Most Shopify SEO engagements end with a spreadsheet of recommendations your developer never gets time to implement. These six deliverables are the work itself, shipped in the store: Liquid templates, metafields, navigation, collection copy and schema.
Theme-level technical SEO in Liquid
Canonical rules, robots directives, pagination handling and internal linking written into your theme’s Liquid rather than bolted on by an app. Every product and collection you add next quarter inherits the same correct output.
Collection page SEO and architecture
A collection map built from what Australians actually search on Google.com.au, not from how your catalogue happens to be tagged. Each collection gets one intent, copy around the grid, and internal links that feed it.
Metafield-driven schema and entities
Product, breadcrumb and FAQ structured data generated from metafields and metaobjects, so it stays accurate as the catalogue turns over. Consistent entity data is what lets assistants quote your product facts rather than a marketplace listing.
Core Web Vitals and app script weight
An audit of every installed app — Afterpay and Zip widgets, reviews, pop-ups, tracking — and what each costs in render-blocking weight. Then image delivery, font loading and layout shift, measured on real Australian field data.
AI search and assistant visibility
Entity, citation and content work for the moment a shopper asks an assistant instead of typing a query. The same product facts across your store, your feeds and the pages that cite you, in the words Australian buyers use.
Search Console to Shopify order reporting
Organic sessions matched to Shopify orders in AUD, so every ranking is reported against revenue you can verify in your own admin. Search Console, GA4 and Shopify analytics reconciled against a baseline set before work starts.
The Shopify SEO process, from audit to compounding collections.
Shopify work ships in five stages, each with the time band we work to rather than promise against. If you want the diagnosis before you commit to any of it, the free Shopify growth analysis covers stage one at no cost.
Audit the store and theme
Crawl, index coverage, theme and app review against the platform issues above, read against your Search Console history. First 1–2 weeks.
Map collections to demand
Collection hierarchy, canonical logic, navigation and the keyword-to-URL map rebuilt so authority reaches the pages that take orders. Weeks 2–4.
Ship it in Liquid
Template changes, metafield schema, collection copy and redirects implemented on a staging copy first, then released in batches. From month 1, shipped weekly.
Tie rankings to orders
Attributed organic revenue and keyword movement reported against Search Console, GA4 and Shopify analytics. Monthly from month 1; first movement typically 30–90 days.
Reinvest what earns
Expand the collections returning revenue, retire the ones that are not, and re-test what the audit assumed. Quarterly from month 3.
Who these Shopify SEO services fit, and who they do not.
The work pays back fastest on catalogues that already sell and already have structure to fix. Three situations where it fits:
Australian DTC brands on Shopify
Stores already turning over real revenue in AUD that want organic search to carry more of the load their Meta and Google Ads budgets carry today.
Variant-heavy fashion and beauty ranges
Catalogues where size, shade and colour variants have quietly become thousands of near-identical URLs. The same structural problem sits behind our fashion ecommerce SEO work.
Retailers whose rankings plateaued
Catalogues stuck on page two while new products keep shipping — usually a structural problem that no amount of extra blog content will fix.
And three where we say no, usually on the first call:
Pre-revenue and pre-launch stores
With no order history there is nothing to attribute and no baseline to measure against. Spend the first months on product and paid traffic, then come back.
Anyone who wants guaranteed rankings
Nobody can promise a position on Google, and an agency that does is guessing. We commit to scope, timelines and reporting, not to positions.
Lowest-price shoppers
If the decision comes down to an hourly rate, we are the wrong call. This is senior implementation in your live theme, not an app subscription and a report.
Where Shopify Plus SEO work starts, and what it stacks on.
Crawl and canonical control
Duplicate product paths collapsed, variant and tag URLs brought under a rule, so each commercial page is found and weighed once.
Collections mapped to demand
Every collection owns one Australian search intent, with the copy, filters and internal links to hold it.
Content that answers first
Buying guides and comparisons that settle the question before the product page has to, plus the links that back them.
Entity and AI visibility
Schema and consistent product facts, so assistants can retrieve and cite the store rather than a reseller.
How a specialist Shopify SEO agency differs from a generalist.
The difference shows up in where the fix is written, what happens to your variant and tag URLs, and whether the report is about positions or orders.
| What matters | Typical agency | EcomOptix |
|---|---|---|
| Where the fix lives | An SEO app plus a list of title-tag edits | Canonical, robots and schema logic written into your theme’s Liquid |
| Variant and tag URLs | Left crawlable, or blocked wholesale in robots.txt | Rules set per template, so filters worth ranking stay indexable |
| Collection pages | A heading and a product grid, left as the theme shipped them | Copy, internal links and schema built into the collection template |
| Shopify Plus expansion stores | Treated as another site to re-optimise later | Multi-store duplication and hreflang handled as one structure, Australia first |
| Execution | A PDF of recommendations for your developer | Implemented in your store by our team, on staging first |
| Reporting | A rankings deck built to look good | Attributed organic revenue in AUD, in your own analytics |
| Contracts | 12-month lock-in before any proof | Month-to-month — we earn the renewal |

What working with our Shopify SEO consultants looks like.
Four things we hold ourselves to in writing.
Senior strategists only
The strategist who plans the work does the work. No handoff down a ladder, no junior learning canonical logic on your live theme.
Revenue-first reporting
Rankings are reported against orders and AUD revenue, measured from a baseline recorded before the first template change ships.
No lock-in contracts
Month-to-month. Templates, schema, collection copy and the documentation stay in your store if you decide to stop.
AEST business hours
Your strategist is reachable across the AEST business day, so a question asked in the morning is answered the same day.
Shopify SEO questions Australian merchants ask us.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes, with caveats. Shopify gives you fast hosting, clean HTTPS and a reliable sitemap out of the box. What it withholds is control over URL structure: its defaults create duplicate product paths, crawlable variant parameters and unlimited tag pages. Shopify SEO is the work of correcting those defaults, then building the collection architecture the platform leaves to you.
Does Shopify have built-in SEO tools?
Yes, but they stop at the basics. Shopify writes canonical tags, a sitemap and a robots file, and gives you fields for titles, meta descriptions, handles and alt text. It does not decide which collections should exist, which variant and tag URLs deserve crawling, or what a collection page says above the grid.
Can you change Shopify’s URL structure?
Not the prefixes. Shopify enforces /products/, /collections/ and /pages/, and no app removes them. What you do control is the handle, the canonical target, which paths get linked internally, and which parameterised URLs may be crawled. That is enough, because duplication is solved by canonical and linking rules rather than by rewriting the path.
Do I need a Shopify SEO app?
Usually not, and often the opposite. Most SEO apps inject scripts and write metadata that duplicates what the theme already outputs, costing page speed and creating conflicting tags. We prefer changes made in the theme’s Liquid: version controlled, no runtime weight, still working the day you cancel. The exception is a redirect manager on a large catalogue.
How much does Shopify SEO cost in Australia?
It depends on catalogue size, competition and whether you want implementation or advice, so any figure quoted before someone has opened your store is a guess. What moves the price is the number of collections and variants, how much sits in apps rather than the theme, and who ships the changes. The free growth analysis scopes it in about three business days.
How long does Shopify SEO take to show results?
Indexation and crawl fixes often move within weeks, because they unblock pages that already carry authority. Competitive commercial rankings in Australia generally take three to six months, longer where national retailers hold the top positions. We report attributed organic revenue from the first month, so you are not waiting on a ranking chart.
Will Shopify SEO work survive a theme change?
Only if it was built to survive one. Work written into a single theme’s Liquid is lost the day you switch, so we document every template-level change and, where the structure allows, drive output from metafields and metaobjects that live outside the theme. Redirects, handles and metafield-driven schema carry across intact.
Do you work with Shopify Plus stores?
Yes. Plus adds scripts, expansion stores and more complex international setups — common for Australian brands opening a New Zealand or United States store — which changes the technical scope but not the approach. The extra work is multi-store duplication, hreflang between expansion stores, and keeping the Australian store canonical for Australian demand.
